Why did audiences like IRON MAN?

Last night I rented IRON MAN at Blockbuster and on the way out of the store an elderly homeless woman curled up on the sidewalk sat up to ask me for money. I gave her all the cash that I had on me, $4.37, and then got into my car and cried. This blog isn't about the homeless but when you encounter any homeless people in your neighborhood, town and city please think twice before you turn up your nose at them- they are just trying to survive like the rest of us.

...ANYWAY, I rented IRON MAN, staring Robert Downey Jr., because I wanted to see what all the hoopla was about and I have to say I STILL don't know what all the hoopla is about.

I know the film is based on the MARVEL comic (and I LOVE MARVEL) but I couldn't get past the first 30 minutes of the film before I got pissed and shut it off. IRON MAN is a womanizing billionaire weapons dealer and not the most sympathetic character. Maybe I missed some super-duper rocket stunts or a topless Gwyneth Paltrow because I too hastily shut off the annoying film but I doubt it.

So if you liked or even loved IRON MAN please tell me why?

i liked it!...I found it to be a fun movie, tongue-in-cheek type. Turn it on again, there's some sort of a character redemption towards the end.

Relax...breathe ;)

Personally, I am not the type of woman to rent Iron Man, but what's another bad movie? However, I do understand your feelings about the homeless. I try to work at a soup kitchen in our city at least twice a year. However, I once lived in the rain forest for awhile and the poverty I witnessed in the third world country I was in has stayed with me. I didn't leave with any money either. Keep the compassion -- it's ultimately the best part of you (besides the humor).

I was dragged by mi little brother to the movies to see this, and I didn't like it at first, but I gotta say, Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Pots TOTALLY owned the film (at least IMO). It's not the best movie ever, it's not even that good, but it has some nice effects, and it serves its purpose of not making you think you just wasted 2 hours of your life...

I admit it wasn't the best of superhero/comic-to-film movies, but I didn't shut it off prematurely. Probably because I never read Iron Man - so I didn't have as many expectations as a die hard Iron Man fan would have. I wasn't thrilled however. But I'll admit that I'd probably watch almost anything with Robert Downey Jr. in it.

That said, there are a lot of better comic-turned-movies out there, but I don't think the fans are ever really content. Well, maybe except for Watchmen - that does look promising :)

I think the main hoopla about Iron Man is that it makes a good effort to stay true to the comicbook original in a way that alot of previous comic book adaptions haven't done. I didn't find the movie that special but friends that are real comic book geeks liked it alot because of the way the comics were transformed to the screen.
