It's me Bridget! As you kow I've been good all year which was really difficult because I hate most people.
Speaking of hate, I hate HATE! More specifically I hate the California voters that voted YES on Proposition 8. Proposition 8 is discriminatory and hateful. And now the Prop 8 proponents are seeking to nullify my marriage and the marriages of the other 18,000 gay couples that legally married before prop 8 passed.
So Santa, there is only one thing I want for Christmas this year. I want all the people who voted Yes on prop 8 to die a slow, lonely and painful death because they are assholes.

Merry xmas, blessed solstice and peace and goodwill to you and yours...I can't ask Santa to bring hurt and pain to others (having watched my dad die a slow and painful death due to cancer,I can't wish it on another no matter how cruel they are), but I will ask Santa to bring clarity and open hearts to the closeminded and heavy hearted people who are trying to take away our rights.

Dear Mrs. Obama,
During this time of year when we are supposed to reflect upon our relationships with our fellow man, I would like you and your husband to reflect upon this.
There was a time when it was illegal for two adult persons of different races who were in love to get married here in the US.
And the funny this is, God was invoked as a reason why they should never get married.
But the government on the federal level got involved and saw how wrong it was for this to be illegal and so on a federal level it was overturned and these marriages were recognized all across the land.
And because of that ruling on a federal level, a man named Barack Obama came to be. You know, the guy you are married to who says that he believes marriage is only for a man and a woman because of God. But the separate and special class of civil unions only for gay couples will be just as good.
Sure, there were a lot of people of many races who did not like the decision and said that the government had no right to interfere on a personal level...but that was what these people were trying to do...interfere on a personal level in other people's lives.
And time went on and the majority got over themselves...though I am sure there are still a few fearful hold-outs to this day. Well, more than a few...but overall, we as a country and a people move forward.
Except recently. As much as we moved forward with the presidential election, we have moved backward in California...as well as what seems to be an overall attitude in the country. As reflected in the choice of Rick Warren to be a part of the inauguration...a man who can say he loves gays with a smile on his face in one moment...but who also has compared being gay to being a pedophile and one who participates in incest in many previous moments.
With all this glossy hate speak coming from our religious and government leaders...when you take the shine off...what it comes down to is that they are telling the citizens of the US that gay people are less than. Each gay person is less than...each gay relationship is less than...and their love is less than. Gays are less of a citizen of this country and less of a human being.
So, Mrs. Obama during this holiday season...please think of the subtle and unspoken message telegraphed to the American public every time a leader in this country talks about civil unions; doubting whether a person is born gay but it is really their choice; comparing being gay to being a criminal; and comparing a gay person wanting to marry the person they love to marrying a goat.
And then meet with Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick's gay daughter and look into her eyes...see her for the citizen of this country that she is...see just how human her heart is and how capable that heart is of love...just like any other human being.
Maybe then you will understand why the gay community is so upset about not being part of the change and the hope that your husband's election promised to all Americans. And maybe you will be able to convey this understanding to President-elect Obama as he seems to just simply not get it...because it is hard for the gay community to cheer for an inclusiveness that we are not being invited to be a part of.

Bridget you rock my world. I'm a British highschool student and i'm 18. My dad, brother and stepmother live in the states and next year between highschool and college i want to come out there and help grant gay people the rights that i'm lucky enough to have here. Any suggestions how?
Funny. I wrote a letter very similar like this at the beginning of December, to Santa.
I hope Santa brings pain to those assholes too.
