My Fake Baby

Whilst flipping through the channels last night I came across the most fascinating show I've ever seen, MY FAKE BABY, on BBC America. MY FAKE BABY is a documentary about women that collect and care for dolls that they treat like real babies.

Here's what the BBC America website says, "Dolls may seem to be just a children's plaything, but a closer look reveals much more. This documentary delves into a small niche of adult women who collect and care for shockingly life-like baby dolls that cost hundreds of dollars. Known as "reborns," some of these dolls have beating hearts and others have tiny veins. They are treated like real babies – with walks in the park, cuddles and regular diaper changes. The documentary follows several women including one who travels to Washington D.C. to pick up the fifth addition to her family of life-like dolls."

I don't even like real babies so I have no idea why anyone would want to spend hundreds of dollars to pretend they have a real baby. This is like buying fake food. Just get real food or no food. That reminds me of when my Nana had fake plastic grapes on the kitchen counter and I would sneak them and chew them and swallow them. Why did I do that? Where were my parents? Why wasn't anyone watching me? Maybe they would have watched me if I cost hundreds of dollars and had a beating heart and tiny veins. Wait...

This is seriously one of the most disturbing things I've heard of/seen in a very long time. Like you said, have real or none at all. Word up.

This is really disturbing. It kind of reminds me of a documentary I saw about men who treat blow-up sex dolls as if they are real women. One guy, balding and kind of pathetic looking (but hey, I'm not judging) had several blow-up sex dolls. Maybe he was into menage a trois. But the whole thing was really odd. Kind of like "Lars and the Real Girl" for real, except the guys in the documentary didn't seem to have any family and no friends. (By the way, if you haven't seen the movie, rent it.)

This baby thing is really creepy though. Do these women KNOW the babies aren't real? Or are they a bit delusional? What do their families' say? Do they have spouses? What do the spouses think of it?

Your parents just let you eat plastic and enjoy it. Mine had me lying awake at night worried I was going to die because I put stuff in my mouth I wasn't supposed to.

What's more F-ed up?

I actually prefer this ladies to the ones having 15 babies, at least with these babies they can't grow up to be pricks.

Yes, this is way bizarre and wacky, but I guess it could be worse! At least they're not bringing more real kids that make noise into this world (unless that's your thing, that's cool). And yes, Lars and the Real Girl is a great movie (not creepy, just sweet).

there's actually a thing called pseudocyesis where the high emphasis placed on reproduction leads women to create false swelling of the abdomen. Some sort of mind-body connection.
